The Purpose of Night Guards

A night guard is a piece of hard plastic made from impressions of your teeth that is placed on the upper and lower teeth while you sleep. Reasons for needing one include bruxism, the act of grinding your teeth while you sleep. The purpose of the night guard is to protect your teeth and jaws. Here at Top Choice Dental we offer custom-made night guards to our patients to fit your bite evenly providing a more effective form of treatment.

If you already grind your teeth, you will grind them much harder in sleep than while you are awake. When this action occurs, it can cause chipping, fractures, excessive wear and loosening of the teeth. Overall, the night guard protects your teeth from grinding and clenching. When your lips come together, your teeth will be apart which initiates a muscle relaxation process. When muscles are relaxed, your teeth will rest on bite pads which are made of a hybrid resilient material that slips comfortably between your teeth.

If you grind your teeth or find yourself waking up with jaw pain, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. What is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer is a malignant growth that affects any part of the oral cavity, including the lips, upper or lower jaw, tongue, gums, cheeks, and throat. Anyone can get oral cancer, but the risk is higher if you are male, over age 40, use tobacco or alcohol or have a history of head or neck cancer. Understanding the causative factors of cancer will contribute to the prevention of the disease. Your health is important to us and you should schedule regular dental checkups with Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental to detect oral cancer early when it is the easiest to treat.

The most common symptom of oral cancer is a sore in the mouth that bleeds easily and does not heal. Another common sign of oral cancer is developing pain in the mouth that does not go away. Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental can examine the mouth and throat as part of a routine checkup if you are concerned about developing oral cancer. During regular checkups, abnormal tissue changes and oral cancer can be detected at its earliest stage when there is a greater chance for a cure.

If you have questions about oral cancer, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.hoptowndental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, call 270-886-8585.

ARESTIN for Gum Disease

Gum disease is the #1 cause of adult tooth loss in the United States. If you don’t practice proper oral hygiene on a daily basis, you can develop gingivitis (the earliest stage of gum disease), which if left untreated can lead to periodontitis (the final stage of gum disease). Gingivitis is reversible, however, periodontitis is not. If your gum disease moves past the stage of gingivitis, Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental may need to apply ARESTIN to the gums, an antibiotic that is used in adjunct to scaling and root planing.

Scaling and root planing is an effective gum disease treatment. In this procedure, our doctors use tools to clean plaque and tartar from your teeth and roots below the gum line. During the procedure, our doctors utilize ARESTIN, an antibiotic containing microspheres that are smaller than grains of sand. ARESTIN is placed directly to your gums and has the power to kill bacteria so your gums can heal better than with scaling and root planing alone. In one single visit, our doctors can add ARESTIN to the pocket between your gum and tooth. It is a painless procedure, with effective results.

If you have questions about ARESTIN, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.hoptowndental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, call 270-886-8585.

How to Keep Your Teeth White and Bright!

A white smile is easy to obtain when you know the right tricks. In addition to our whitening services here at Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, we want our patients to know how to keep bright, white, and shiny teeth!

A white smile is a great confidence booster. While we have professional whitening services here in our Hopkinsville, KY office, it is good to know some tips for avoiding staining.

Try to stay away from darker foods like coffee, blueberries, and tomato sauce. It is not always easy to stay away from these, especially if they are favorites so rinse your mouth after consuming them when you do. Rinsing is also important when eating foods high in acidic content, like citric fruits and energy drinks. Also be sure to have a regular oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing.

Baking soda is a popular home treatment method for teeth whitening, but be informed. Baking soda is very abrasive, which is bad for teeth. It wears away enamel, which eventually will turn your teeth dark; the opposite of what you want. In addition, worn away enamel makes teeth prone to cavities. Instead, visit us for our custom take-home whitening trays.

Follow these tips and keep those pearly whites white! For information about our professional whitening, schedule an appointment with Top Choice Dental of Hopkinsville, KY by calling (270) 886-8585. More information can also be found on our website, www.hoptowndental.com

Make Sure You Brush for Long Enough

In order to brush all the areas of your mouth adequately, you should be brushing for about two minutes. While the sometimes mundane task of brushing your teeth may cause you to quickly swipe your teeth and go, it is important to spend enough time taking care of your teeth and gums. Top Choice Dental of Hopkinsville, KY wants to remind patients to brush effectively! Take some tips for making sure you are spending a full two minutes brushing!

Tunes

Play some music while you are brushing your teeth! It may even help you wake up in the morning! Most music players also have a timer, so just rock out until you hit two minutes!

Cell Phones

Phones are timers and watches for many people. Set a two-minute timer on your phone! If your phone has music on it, that’s bonus!

Break it Up

Split your mouth into four sections and spend thirty seconds on each section. Just don’t forget your tongue, inner cheeks, and the roof of your mouth!

Electric Toothbrushes

Many electric toothbrushes have automatic timers on them. They pause in vibration a couple of times when you have hit two minutes!

Keep a good at-home oral care routine and have great dental checkups! To schedule an appointment with Top Choice Dental of Hopkinsville, KY, call us at (270) 886-8585 or visit our website, www.hoptowndental.com

Dental Cleaning (Prophylaxis) Explained

No matter how much you diligently brush or floss your teeth at home, harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that can only be removed by a dental professional. These bacteria can cause gum disease, and significantly affect your overall health. Here at Top Choice Dental, our hygienists will use professional tools to remove plaque, tartar and bacteria build-up that you are unable to efficiently remove yourself.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry it is recommended that a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months. The professional dental cleaning reinforces the home-care oral health regimen of brushing and flossing and gives Dr. Greg Fort an opportunity to locate areas in the mouth that may need special attention. During a teeth cleaning, our hygienists will thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. Once the surfaces are smooth, polishing is done using a slow speed hand piece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end. Last but not least, the dentist flosses every crevice between your teeth.

If you need your teeth cleaned don’t wait any longer, call us today so we can help you maintain a healthy smile! To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.hoptowndental.com for more information. Are You Suffering From Sensitive Teeth?

Is a sip of hot coffee or the taste of biting into a cold apple sometimes a painful experience for you? If so, you may have sensitive teeth. Tooth sensitivity is one of the most common complaints among dental patients. In fact, at least, 40 million adults suffer at some time from sensitive teeth. Fortunately, Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental offers a variety of treatments to provide you with relief so that you don’t have to be one of them.

Tooth sensitivity is caused by the movement of fluid within tiny tubes located in the dentin (the layer of tissue found beneath the hard enamel that contains the inner pulp), which results in nerve irritation. When the hard enamel is worn down or gums have receded, causing the tiny tube surfaces to be exposed, pain can be caused by eating or drinking foods or hot or cold beverages, or exposing your teeth to cold air. Luckily for our patients, tooth sensitivity can be reduced by using desensitizing toothpaste or having Dr. Greg Fort apply sealants and/or fluoride treatment.

If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Dental Bonding Benefits

Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth-colored resin material is applied and hardened with a special light, which ultimately “bonds” the material to the tooth to restore or improve a person’s smile. Dental bonding may be considered when a tooth is chipped or cracked, to repair decayed teeth, to close spaces between teeth, and to improve the appearance of discolored teeth. The first step in deciding whether dental bonding is right for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental so you can discuss your treatment goals.

One of the top benefits of dental bonding is that it’s the easiest and least expensive cosmetic dental procedure. In addition, the composite resin used in bonding can be shaped and polished to match the surrounding teeth. Sometimes, bonding also is used as a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings, or to protect a portion of the tooth’s root that has been exposed when gums recede.

Advantages of Teeth Whitening

How many of us get a confidence boost when a stranger gives us a compliment? Have you ever paid attention to how much of a positive effect this has on your self-esteem? The same applies to teeth whitening. Teeth-whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth or even make them whiter than your natural color if you would like. Here at Top Choice Dental, Dr. Greg Fort can help you do just that.

With all of the lifestyle habits and environmental factors that have the ability to stain our teeth on a daily basis, even proper maintenance sometimes leave them a little dull. Fortunately, through our tray whitening system, your pearly whites can revive their shine. In addition, teeth-whitening can also take years off of your appearance. This is because as we age, over time, our teeth darken and can become yellow, brown, or even develop a green or gray tint (which may be due to heredity and/or eating habits). Your smile speaks volumes about who you are and leaves an everlasting impression, so it’s only natural that you want it to be as radiant as possible.

Your Child’s First Visit to Top Choice Dental

If you are a new parent, you may find yourself asking, “When should my child first see a dentist?” The answer is that a child should have their first dental visit by their first birthday. The first dental visit is usually short and involves very little treatment. It is our goal here at Top Choice Dental is to make your child’s first dental visit as smooth and comfortable as possible.

The best way to prepare for this visit is to consider what you want to know, what you want to look for and what you should expect. Teaching children these habits early can lead to a lifetime of good dental health. You can also expect us to review your child’s history, respond to your questions and concerns, as well as talk to you about your child’s overall oral health, including development, teething, biting, oral habits such as sucking, and factors that affect the risk of cavities, such as diet and hygiene practices.

Foods to Eat with TMJ/TMD

If you suffer from a TMJ disorder, you may notice a clicking or a popping in your jaw when you try to eat your favorite foods. This is because symptoms of TMJ disorder can include jaw discomfort and tenderness or pain when opening or closing the mouth. At Top Choice Dental, Dr. Greg Fort doesn’t want you to live on a soft diet, but incorporating soft foods into your diet may alleviate your discomfort.

Soft foods give your jaw and temporomandibular joints the opportunity to rest and heal. Some excellent (and healthy) foods to eat include cooked vegetables and fruits, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies, soup, and yogurt. If you must eat food that requires a heavy amount of chewing, we recommended chopping it up into small pieces. If you have a sweet tooth, soft cakes, cobblers and cheesecake are good things to choose from.

Bottom Line of Bruxism

Grinding of your teeth, also known as bruxism can have a variety of causes. Some people grind their teeth only during sleep. This is called “nocturnal bruxism” or “sleep-related bruxism.” Others grind or clench their teeth during the daytime as well. Some experts view bruxism as nothing more than a habit. It can also be a result of the body’s reaction when the teeth do not line up or come together properly. If you experience signs and symptoms of bruxism, Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental can develop an individualized treatment plan with you.

When diagnosing bruxism, one of our doctors will ask about your general dental health, what sources of stress you have in your life, and what medicines you take. He will examine you, paying special attention to the muscles in and around your jaw. He will also look at your teeth for evidence of grinding. During this examination, one of our doctors will check for tenderness in your jaw muscles and the jaw joint. A more detailed exam may follow if your dentist suspects that your bruxism is related to dental problems.

If you believe you have bruxism, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. The Root Canal Procedure

Here at Top Choice Dental, a root canal is the treatment we use to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. Dr. Greg Fort knows that this can be a scary procedure for some and we would like to ease your anxiety by providing you with a step-by-step guide on how we complete the process.

The area around the tooth is first numbed with an anesthetic to start the procedure. One of our dentists will then drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal. They will then be able to remove the infected tissue and clean the canal. After the infection has been removed, the space is filled with a sealant called gutta percha. Your tooth will then be placed with a temporary crown until you are able to be fitted with a permanent one.

If you have questions about the root canal procedure, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.hoptowndental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, call 270-886-8585.

Mouth Guards and Athletes

Mouth guard use has been shown to reduce the risk of sport-related dental injuries. Imagine playing a sport that you love and suddenly your teeth get knocked out. Smiling, talking and eating would be difficult and it will probably take you some time to recover. When it comes to protecting your mouth, a mouth guard is an essential piece of athletic gear that should be part of your standard from an early age. Fortunately, Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental can provide patients of all ages with custom-fitted mouth guards for proper protection.

Custom mouth guards are made from exact and precise models of an individual’s own teeth. They are also made of resilient and tear-resistant materials ensuring a proper fit. A properly fitted mouth guard absolutely must be protective, comfortable, resilient, tear resistant, odorless, tasteless, and allow room for you to breathe. Because our custom-fitted mouth guards are made for your mouth and your mouth only, they are more reliable than over-the-counter mouth guards.

Facts on Fluoride

Fluoride is a natural mineral found throughout the earth’s crust and widely distributed in nature and is often added to water to help reduce tooth decay. Research has shown that fluoride not only reduces cavities in children and adults, but it also helps repair the early stages of tooth decay, even before the decay is visible. Here at Top Choice Dental, Dr. Greg Fort can discuss professional fluoride treatments with you to see if you are a prime candidate.

When fluoride reaches your teeth, it is absorbed into the enamel. Fluoride helps to repair the enamel by replenishing the lost calcium and phosphorus to keep your teeth hard through a process called remineralization. When fluoride is present during this process, the minerals deposited into the tooth enamel help strengthen your teeth and prevent dissolution during the next demineralization phase. The results are stronger tooth enamel and a cavity-free smile.

Choosing the Correct Mouthwash

Mouthwash or rinses are used for a variety of reasons: to freshen breath, to help prevent or control tooth decay, to reduce plaque, to prevent or reduce gingivitis, to reduce the speed that tartar forms on the teeth, or to produce a combination of these effects.  Mouthwash has a few beneficial properties and Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental would like to explain some of them.

  • Antimicrobial agents act directly on oral bacteria to help reduce plaque, decrease the severity of gingivitis and control bad breath.

  • Fluoride helps reduce tiny lesions (tooth decay) on tooth enamel and make teeth more resistant to decay.

  • Astringent salts can serve as temporary deodorizers that mask bad breath.

  • Odor neutralizers act by chemically inactivating odor causing compounds.

Flossing with Braces

As Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental will tell you, flossing can be difficult when you have traditional metal braces, but it’s more important than ever to keep the gaps in your teeth clean when you have a mouth full of metal. Many folks who have braces don’t know how to floss with them or think that they can’t floss at all if they have braces and this is not true. Therefore, we thought we would share some tips with you for flossing effectively.

  • Use waxed floss, because unwaxed floss is more likely to get caught and shred in your braces.

  • Use about 18 inches of floss and thread it carefully.

  • Take the floss and gently thread it under the main wire of the braces before passing it between two teeth. Then remove the floss and re-thread it under the main wire to pass between the next pair of teeth.

  • Be sure not to snap the floss. Simply move the floss up and down carefully against the side of each tooth.

Brushing with Braces

If you have braces, your oral hygiene routine should be accelerating into overdrive. The reason for this is that braces have tiny spaces where food particles and plaque get trapped, and inadequate cleaning while wearing these wires can cause enamel staining and tooth decay around brackets or bands. At Top Choice Dental, Dr. Greg Fort can’t stand behind you to monitor how you often you brush, but he can recommend the following routine to help make daily brushing and flossing with braces both simple and effective.

  • Prepare to brush – take off elastics, and any other removable parts of your orthodontic appliance.

  • Clean your braces – use your brush at a 45-degree angle to clean around the wires and pins of your braces. Brush the top of each wire and then from the bottom. Take time to ensure that all plaque and debris are removed.

  • Brush your teeth – clean each tooth individually. First, place your brush at a 45-degree angle to the junction between the tooth and the gum, and then apply gentle pressure as you move in a circular motion. Use the same brushing action on all outer and inner tooth surfaces, tilting the brush as needed to better reach the insides of smaller front teeth.

Last but not least, don’t forget to floss in between brackets!

Reasons for Necessary Tooth Extractions

Although permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, having a tooth pulled is sometimes necessary. At Top Choice Dental, Dr. Greg Fort would like you to know that before he considers extraction, every effort will be made to try to repair and restore your tooth.  You’re probably most familiar with wisdom teeth extractions, but other reasons for the procedure may include:

  • Severe tooth damage/trauma – some teeth have such extensive decay and damage (broken or cracked) that repair is not possible.

  • Orthodontic treatment – people getting braces may need teeth extracted to create room for teeth that are being moved into place.

  • Some teeth may need to be extracted if they have the potential of becoming infected.

  • Extra teeth – extra teeth may block other teeth from erupting, therefore, will require extraction.

If you have a tooth that is causing you pain, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Different Stages of Gum Disease

If you want to keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime, then you need to practice a proper oral hygiene routine on a daily basis. If you don’t, you’re already headed down the road toward gum disease. Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth and there are three stages that you should be aware of. Additionally, you should always schedule professional cleanings and oral exams with Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental twice a year to avoid this condition.

  • Gingivitis – This is the earliest stage of gum disease, an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup at the gum line. If daily brushing and flossing do not remove the plaque, it produces toxins that can irritate the gum tissue, causing gingivitis. This is when you’ll notice blood in the sink after you complete your brushing routine. However, at this early stage, damage can be reversed, since the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place are not yet affected.

  • Periodontitis – This is the second stage of gum disease. By this point, the supporting bone and fibers that hold your teeth in place are irreversibly damaged. Your gums may even begin to form a pocket below the gum line, which traps food and plaque.

  • Advanced Periodontitis – This is the final stage of gum disease, and the fibers and bone supporting your teeth are officially destroyed. In this case, your teeth may begin to shift or loosen and your bite may also be affected. If aggressive treatment can’t save them, the teeth will need to be extracted.

Details on Dental Emergencies

Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental understands that accidents happen. Being informed about what to do in case one occurs can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. If you or your child experience some sort of trauma to your mouth for whatever reason, please give us a call immediately. We promise to assist you quickly and help put your mind at ease. Meanwhile, in the midst of a dental emergency, utilize these tips to ensure a smooth recovery.

  • For a knocked-out permanent or adult tooth, keep it moist at all times. If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, place it between your cheek and gums, or use a tooth preservation product that has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance.

  • For a cracked tooth, immediately rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area.

  • If you bite your tongue or lip, clean the area gently with water and apply a cold compress.

  • For toothaches, rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between teeth.

Reasons Teeth May Be Tender

If you avoid eating cold foods or drinking hot beverages because your teeth are a little tender, it may be time to get to the overcome this obstacle. If you experience tooth sensitivity, Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental may recommend dental sealants or fluoride treatments to decrease tenderness. Sometimes the solution is simply breaking bad habits. If you catch yourself performing any of the following, do your best to discontinue.

  • You’re brushing too hard – over time, if you brush with too much force, you can wear down the protective layers of your teeth and expose the microscopic hollow tubes or canals that lead to your dental nerves. When these tubules are exposed, tooth sensitivity is a result.

  • You’re eating too many acidic foods – If the pathways to your nerves are exposed, acidic foods will leave you in pain.

  • You have tooth decay – If you have tooth decay, it’s easy for bacteria to accumulate in these tiny crevices, which causes acid build-up and enamel breakdown.

  • You’re a tooth grinder – Grinding your teeth can wear down your enamel. This exposes the dentin and causes sensitive teeth.

Dental Bridge Basics and Benefits

At Top Choice Dental, Dr. Greg Fort may recommend a dental bridge if you are missing one or more teeth. This is because gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. A bridge, also known as a fixed removable denture, is made to replace one or more of your missing teeth. Bridges can be supported by natural teeth, implants, or a combination of both.

Dental bridges have the ability to restore your smile, restore the ability to properly chew and speak, prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position, and distribute the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth. There are three main types of bridges, and Dr. Greg Fort will discuss them with you during your consultation. Placement of the bridge requires two visits and the result will be a brand new, confident smile.

Tips for a Camera-Ready Smile

Here at Top Choice Dental, we realize that keeping teeth their whitest is a lot harder than it sounds. After all, with the coffee, wine and other foods that have the ability to stain our teeth on a daily basis, even proper maintenance sometimes leaves them a little lackluster. Teeth whitening is an excellent way to restore the natural color of your teeth or even make them whiter than your natural color, if you would like. However, if there is any reason you can’t go the cosmetic route at this moment, we will provide you with these tips that will give you a photogenic smile.

Be natural – when it’s picture time, smile gently. That way, your face looks relaxed. Your mouth opens slightly, and your lower lip matches the curve of your upper teeth.

Check your teeth and gums – getting your smile camera-ready sometimes calls for a little behind the scenes prep work. If your pearly whites have yellowed with age, try an over-the-counter whitening product or pay us a visit! Also, don’t forget about taking care of your gums. They play a critical role in your nice smile. So keep them in good shape by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouthwash every day.

Practice – your perfect smile may not happen overnight, but if you have a big photo event like a wedding or a graduation coming up, it doesn’t hurt to try out your grin in front of the mirror!

Tooth Shapes and Functions

Our teeth are critical when it comes to providing nourishment to our bodies. After all, they help us chew and digest food, play an important role in speech, and impact our health overall. If you’ve ever stood in front of a mirror and wondered why all of your teeth look different it’s because they all serve a different purpose in your mouth. Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental thought it would be fun to inform you all about the different types of teeth and their functions. Read on to learn more!

  • Incisors – located at the front of the mouth, these teeth have a sharp biting surface and are used for cutting or shearing food into small chewable pieces.

  • Canines – located at the ‘corners’ of the dental arches, these teeth have a sharp pointed biting surface. Their function is to grip and tear food.

  • Premolars – Unlike incisors and canines, these teeth have a flat biting surface. Their function is to tear and crush food.

  • Molars – The molars are the largest teeth in the mouth and they too have a large flat biting surface. The function of these is perhaps the strongest of all as they chew, crush, and grind food.

Intraoral Camera

At Top Choice Dental, we know that advancing our technology means our patients will get the best, most accurate diagnoses. One of the ways we have updated our technology is by utilizing the intraoral camera here in our Hopkinsville, KY dental practice.

The intraoral camera allows us to look at a spot in the mouth closer than ever before. The camera is a pen-like device that can go into the mouth and take close-up pictures and video. In the past, we may not have been able to clearly view a spot in a hard-to-reach area. Now, the images are displayed onto a monitor so we can instantly take a look and better diagnose any problems found. We can zoom in and use software that helps us detect issue the human eye may have missed.

Using these pictures, we can refer back to them at future appointments, upgrading efficiency. Since these photos are digital, we can save, print, or email them as easy as ever. Patients can even take the pictures home with them so they can report back any changes. We can also instantly send them to another doctor or an insurance company.

Routine oral examinations by your dentist are recommended for keeping great oral health. To schedule your next appointment or to learn more about Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, give us a call at (270) 886-8585. Appointments may also be made through our website, www.hoptowndental.com

Scaling and Planing for Gum Disease

Gum disease can cause the loss of teeth, spread of infection, and it can even increase one’s risk of heart attack and stroke. Proper treatment is necessary to restore oral and overall health. Here at Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, scaling and root planing is part of how we treat gum disease.

Scaling and root planing contains two procedures. First, your dentist will scale your teeth, which means he is going to remove the plaque and tartar that is irritating the gums and causing cavities. Then, root planing takes place. Root planing involves smoothing down rough patches on the root so that bacteria cannot hide. This process is usually done in sections to minimize the patient’s time sitting in the chair. When all sections of the mouth are finished, the gums can heal healthily.

Gum disease begins with red, irritated gums that bleed easily. It can eventually evolve into a worse stage characterized by swollen, bright red gums that bleed, are painful, and cause bad breath. Pus may even develop in between the teeth as the infection develops. It can lead to the loss of teeth, increased overall health risks, and the spread of infection.

If you suspect you are developing gum disease, do not wait to schedule an appointment with us in our Hopkinsville, KY dental practice. To schedule at Top Choice Dental, call our office at (270) 886-8585 or visit our website, www.hoptowndental.com

Occlusal Adjustment for Uneven Bites

An uneven bite or uneven feeling jaw is often the result of teeth clenching, grinding, missing teeth, or crowded teeth. Shifting teeth can also cause this problem. It can create sensitivity and abnormal wear-down on teeth. Fortunately, at Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, we can perform occlusal adjustments for our patients with uncomfortable, uneven bites.

An occlusal adjustment is simply altering how your top and bottom teeth meet. We take a very fine file with a dental drill to reshape areas of the teeth. Our new technology allows us to detect very small disturbances in the bite, so we can make minor but accurate adjustments. Our computer program scans your mouth to find these tiny irregularities. We then use the dental drill and file to reshape the irregularities so that they will meet up with the rest of your teeth properly.

An even bite distributes pressure correctly and stops teeth from rubbing on other teeth in a destructive way. The end result of an occlusal adjustment should be a jaw that feels even, meets together comfortably, and does not create pain.

If you feel like your bite is “off” or like it is causing you pain, do not hesitate to come in for an examination. To schedule an appointment with Top Choice Dental of Hopkinsville, KY, call our office at (270) 886-8585 or visit our website, www.hoptowndental.com

Inlays and Onlays- Partial Crowns That Look Natural

When a tooth sustains damage, it doesn’t always need to be fixed with a full dental crown. However, often it does need just a little more than a filling. This is why Top Choice Dental here in Hopkinsville, KY chooses to utilize inlays and onlays for dental restoration.

Inlays and onlays restore the chewing surface of the tooth. An inlay covers the chewing surface without any cusps. An onlay covers the chewing surface plus one or more cusps. These inlays and onlays are very durable; they have the ability to last for up to thirty years. They are also able to be made completely natural-looking so they will blend in with the rest of your tooth.

We create inlays and onlays by first removing any decay from your tooth and then taking an impression of the tooth. We send this impression to a dental laboratory to create a custom inlay or onlay made of gold, composite resin, or porcelain. The creation process will probably take a few weeks, so during this time, we will fit you with a temporary inlay or onlay. When the custom restoration is complete, we will permanently bond it into place.

Dental restorations do not have to ruin your smile. For a natural-looking restoration, contact Top Choice Dental of Hopkinsville, KY by calling our office at (270) 886-8585 or visiting our website, www.hoptowndental.com

Veneers for a Picture Perfect Smile

Spring is on its way, which means it’s close to party season! Weddings, BBQs, and holiday weekends galore. Prepare yourself with a beautiful smile you will be proud to show off in all those party pictures! At Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, we offer our patients veneers for a picture perfect smile!

Veneers are able to fix the look of many aesthetic issues like stains, cracks, crooked teeth, misshapen teeth, gaps, and more. All without the hassle of surgery or orthodontics. Veneers are thin ceramic shells that are permanently bonded to your existing teeth. They are durable and stain-resistant, so with good care, you can keep a perfect smile for five to ten years. The great thing is that they do not require any special care. You can take care of them just like you would your normal teeth; brush two to three times per day, floss once per day, and make routine visits to your dentist.

To apply veneers, first we prepare the teeth by removing a small amount of enamel. The veneers will replace this enamel. Once all of the teeth are prepared, we take impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental laboratory where a set of custom veneers are created for you. They are completely custom so they will fit great and look natural. While the veneers are being created, you will wear a temporary set of veneers. The permanent veneers are bonded into place when ready. The next time you smile for a picture you will have a brilliant and bright smile!

Custom, Natural-Looking Crowns

Decayed or cracked teeth become weak and painful. They may no longer be able to last a lifetime in your mouth. They need strength and protection to become healthy again. At Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, we add crowns to cracked or decayed teeth to restore their functionality and life.

When a tooth has some decay, is cracked, or is otherwise damaged, it can cause pain and become weak. If not treated, it can lead to infection and removal of the whole tooth. It is important to keep our original teeth for as long as we can which is why when a tooth becomes weakened but still has an intact root, we do not pull it. Instead, we place a crown on it. A dental crown is like a cap that covers the entire tooth that shows out of the gums. It restores its strength so you can continue to use it and it restores its health so it can stick around for a long time. In addition, we are able to make custom crowns that look very natural. You won’t be able to tell the different between your crown and a normal tooth!

To create a custom crown, we first prepare the tooth by removing any decay and reshaping it. An impression is then taken of the tooth. This impression is sent to a dental laboratory where the crown will be created from gold, porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal. During the creation process, you will wear a temporary crown. After the custom crown is ready, it is cemented into place.

If you are worried about how your tooth will look after it is restored, don’t sweat it! We can make natural-looking custom crowns. To schedule your appointment with Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, call our office at (270) 886-8585 or visit our website, www.hoptowndental.com

Replace Missing Teeth with Dental Bridges

If you have missing teeth and desire a non-invasive treatment option, then dental bridges may be the right choice for you. Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth and help restore your smile and ability to speak properly. At Top Choice Dental, our staff is certain that you’re already aware of the aesthetic disadvantages of missing a tooth, but missing teeth could also cause structural changes to your mouth and jaw, as well as making it difficult to eat or speak properly.

In addition to improving your speech and chewing ability, dental bridges can strengthen damaged teeth and improve a tooth’s appearance, shape, alignment, and dental occlusion. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap – these two or more anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth – and false tooth/teeth in between. These false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, metal, allows, or porcelain. Bridges are typically supported by natural teeth, implants, or both.

If you think you may benefit from a dental bridge, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.hoptowndental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, call 270-886-8585.

Should My Child Wear a Mouthguard?

If your child plays a contact sport such as hockey, football, wrestling, or basketball, they should wear a mouthguard to protect their teeth during play. Imagine if your child suddenly had a tooth knocked out. Smiling, talking, and eating would suddenly be affected. At Top Choice Dental, we provide pediatric patients with custom-made mouthguards to help prevent against dental injuries so you don’t have to worry.

Wearing a mouthguard helps prevent injuries such as lacerations to the cheeks, tongue and lips. Though many mouthguards are available in any sporting goods store, a custom-fitted mouthguard offers the best level of comfort, because it is made for your child’s mouth and his or her mouth only. At Top Choice Dental, our custom made night guards are created with thin plastic that is hardened to protect your teeth. The thinness allows for easy breathing and easy communication so that you can maintain the highest level of performance on the field or the court.

If you believe your child will benefit from a mouthguard, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.hoptowndental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, call 270-886-8585.

Causes of Tooth Sensitivity

Does sipping on a hot or cold beverage send a sharp shooting pain into your tooth’s nerve? If you’ve answered yes, then you’ve likely developed tooth sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity occurs when the enamel that protects our teeth gets thinner, or when gum recession occurs, exposing the underlying surface called the dentin, thus reducing the protection the enamel and gums provide to the tooth and root. At Top Choice Dental, the treatment for your sensitive teeth will depend on the cause.

If you brush your teeth too hard or use a hard-bristled toothbrush, you may be setting yourself up for disaster. This method of brushing can wear down enamel and expose the dentin, causing you pain. Also, tooth decay, teeth grinding, and gum disease are also culprits of tooth sensitivity. The best way to control the sensitive situation in addition to scheduling regular dental checkups is by practicing and maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine.

If you suffer from sensitive teeth, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.hoptowndental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, call 270-886-8585.

Cavity Basics

There’s a lot going on in your mouth throughout the day. One event that is occurring consists of bacteria swimming around and constantly building up on teeth in the form of a sticky film called plaque. When this plaque stays on your teeth it creates acid attacks on the enamel and creates holes called cavities. In order to prevent plaque buildup and cavities, you should schedule regular dental checkups at Top Choice Dental at least twice a year.

Many people think that only children get cavities, but changes in your mouth as you age make them an adult problem, too. As you get older, your gums pull away from your teeth and expose the roots of your teeth to plaque. If your diet is high in sugar and carbohydrates, you are the top candidate for cavities. If you’ve had a cavity for a while, you may develop a toothache. However, sometimes cavities don’t cause any pain. Dr. Greg Fort will find your cavities during a dental checkup. Treatment depends on how bad the cavity is.

If you suspect you have a cavity, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.hoptowndental.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental in Hopkinsville, KY, call 270-886-8585.

Do You Need a Night Guard?

Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding, is a condition in which you clench and grind your teeth. If you grind your teeth unconsciously during the day you may eventually suffer from worn tooth enamel, teeth that are flattened, fractured, chipped or loose, as well as tired or tight jaw muscles. If you already experience one of the following, then it’s time to talk to Dr. Greg Fort at Top Choice Dental about receiving a night guard.

The night guard, which is very similar to a mouth guard worn by athletes, provides a barrier between your top and bottom teeth while you sleep. Here at Top Choice Dental, all of our night guards are custom-fitted for comfort and to allow for proper breathing. The biggest benefit you’ll receive from a night guard is the protection it will provide for your tooth enamel. Teeth grinding is a common issue, but you shouldn’t have to suffer.

If you find yourself waking up with jaw pain, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about night guards as well as other services we provide at the practice, visit www.hoptowndental.com for more information. Seal out Cavities with Sealants

While brushing and flossing help to remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth, toothbrush bristles often can’t reach into the teeth’s depressions and grooves. Plaque is constantly forming in our mouths from the food that we eat and when it lingers in these grooves it can lead to cavities. A dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating that is painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth – usually the back molars – to prevent tooth decay. At Top Choice Dental we can apply sealants in just one appointment and they can last up to 10 years.

Back molars are the teeth that are most vulnerable to cavities and decay because they are used in the chewing process, and are the most difficult to reach and clean. Typically, children should get sealants because of their likelihood of developing decay in the depressions and grooves of their premolars and molars. However, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can benefit from sealants as well.

If you find yourself suffering from tooth sensitivity, please give us a call. To learn more about sealants as well as other services we provide at the practice, visit www.hoptowndental.com for more information. Don’t Let Plaque Pester You

If you’ve ever felt a fuzzy buildup on your teeth while licking them with your tongue, that pesky buildup is called plaque. Plaque contains bacteria, which following a meal or snack containing sugar can release acids that attack tooth enamel, eventually contributing to tooth decay and gum disease when left untreated. Plaque that is not removed with thorough daily brushing and flossing can eventually harden into tartar. When tartar accumulates, only our staff of hygienists at Top Choice Dental can remove it.

Plaque is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that constantly forms on our teeth and along the gum line. Plaque that is not removed from around the gum line can cause inflammation and irritation to the gums around your teeth. Red, puffy or bleeding gums can be the first signs of gum disease and if not treated, the tissues holding the teeth in place are destroyed and the teeth are eventually lost. In addition to practicing a proper oral hygiene routine, it is important to schedule professional cleanings twice a year to prevent plaque from getting worse.

If you have plaque buildup and are due for a dental checkup, please give us a call.
